If you are unhappy with your appearance and want to make a change, a plastic surgeon may be able to help you. But before considering these procedures, you should talk with the plastic surgeon about the parts of your body you’d like to improve. They can not only help evaluate the best procedure for you to achieve the desired results, they can also help you decide if plastic surgery is right for you. The best way is to simply have a conversation. If you don’t know where to start, here are some questions for your first consultation with a plastic surgeon that can better help you understand the process and how it can benefit you.
How will plastic surgery help me?
Plastic surgeons offer both surgical and nonsurgical options to improve a person’s appearance. While many people may want to try face or neck exercises to improve the tightness of their facial skin, these exercises won’t work to reduce facial sag. Only cosmetic surgical procedures like face lifts and neck lifts can reduce facial sag. Breast implants, liposuction to remove weight and rhinoplasty to change the size of the nose are common procedures. And injections can also reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Together, these procedures can bring about a more youthful appearance that can inspire confidence and improve your quality of life.
Where will my procedure be performed?
Most plastic surgery procedures are performed at out patient facilities at the surgeon’s office. When evaluating plastic surgeons in your area, find out about their surgical facilities. Even though plastic surgery is common and performed safely thousands of times a year, like all surgical procedures, it carries some risks in rare circumstances. On these occasions, if emergency hospitalization in required, having a surgeon with direct hospital access can improve your overall care. Additionally, you should ask if the surgeon is accredited by a reputable hospital organization. Dr. John J. Obi, MD, is accredited by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities.
What materials are used in your procedures?
Restylane, Botox and collegen are materials used in plastic surgery procedures to smooth out the skin, removing wrinkles and returning a youthful appearance. However, these different materials can have different capabilities and usefulness. Restylane generally lasts the longest and has the fewest negative consequences. Often Botox and Restlylane are used in conjunction with each other, with Botox being used to address wrinkles in the upper part of the face while Restlyne is generally more effective smoothing wrinkles in the lower part of the face.
How often do I have to repeat the procedures?
Botox injections will generally last three to four months and require repeat treatments on that schedule. With repeated use, Botox is observed to have longer lasting effects. Restalyne generally lasts a little longer — six months on average — and will also require repeat injections. When either of these treatments begin to wear off, it will result in increased muscle action. You’ll also see wrinkles reform. For surgical procedures like face lifts, the procedure will last longer if you maintain a healthy weight and otherwise keep up a healthy lifestyle.
