Breast Reduction Facts for Patients

The decision to have a breast reduction procedure is a very personal one. Physical and emotional factors may both be involved in the choice.

The most common reasons for breast reductions are:
• To get relief from skin irritation and rashes
• To ease pain in the neck, shoulders and back
• To improve mobility and activity which may have been restricted by large breasts
• To improve the cosmetic appearance of the breasts
• To improve sleep
• To fit into clothes better and eliminate bra strap grooves on shoulders

Prior to the surgery, the patient will have a consultation with Dr. Obi. At that time, he will describe the procedure, the preparations and the recovery. The patient will be told to avoid taking any medication that causes bleeding, such as aspirin, Motrin or Aleve.

The procedure will be performed at an outpatient, ambulatory surgery facility and general anesthesia will be used. The whole operation will take in between three to four hours, depending on the actual reduction procedure.

Under certain criteria, the procedure may be covered by health insurance.

In some cases, techniques can be used to eliminate the vertical or a portion of the lower crease part of the scar. Occasionally, when only fat needs to be removed, liposuction alone can be used to reduce breast size, leaving minimal scars.

For post surgery care, these items should be readily available for the patient:
• A lot of ice packs
• Clean washcloths and towels
• Gauze
• T shirts and blouses that are roomy and comfortable
• All prescription or non-prescription medications and ointments the doctor recommends

After about three weeks, the patient should be able to return to work with the comfort of their new and less cumbersome breast.
